Should the drinking age be lowered? I think the drinking age is fine exactly where it is, at mature 21. Even though teenagers are positive that they are mature and responsible enough to handle being able to legally drink, they aren't. I know I certainly am not. Maybe those that can legally drink aren't either, but the line does have to be drawn somewhere. Another very important factor is how it affects others, younger and older. A common arguement that younger kids will be more likely to drink is valid, and probably most likely. A vital fact to consider, also, is driving. Drinking and driving is already an issue, for those that can and can't legally drink. For those that can't legally drink, they will drink more if the age is lowered, take advantage of their new privelege. Though that might not be the case a year or more after the law is passed, it will happen within the first year. That may put drinking and driving at a higher rate. Alcohol poisining may also be at a higher rate. A new drink came out, 4loko, and those who can and can't legally drink are quickly taking advantage of that. But look how many problems it's caused: it's already being banned from schools. So no, the drinking age should stay where it is.
Natasha, I definitely agree with you. The drinking age should not be lowered. I strongly agree with the statement that you said about teenagers thinking they are mature enough to drink alcohol and even deal with the effects of it. But that is just it, they only THINK they can handle it. To be truthful, I agree with you because they most certainly cannot. There is a drinking age for a reason. Although I think it started because of highway accidents, the drinking age should be followed. You made a nice point by adding that many adults think they can handle it but also cannot. Drinking causes too many problems for kids, and even more for adults. Marriages break up due to alcoholism; families are broken up, depression, and deaths along with countless problems. I agree that teenagers will take full advantage of this lowering privilege. It is like that saying, give an inch, take a mile. New drinks are already being made a banned like you said. It is a crazy world and again, i completely agree the drinking age cannot be lowered. Within the first year, extreme chaos will break out. This is a very good point Natasha and by reading everyone’s responses I am glad most people agree.
